Miguel Altuna at CLF 2025: Merging Industry 4.0 and Learning Factories in South Africa

Miguel Altuna has participated in the 15th Conference on Learning Factories (CLF 2025), held from March 25 to 28 in Stellenbosch, South Africa. This edition has been particularly significant as it marks the first time that CLF has been organized in this country.

CLF is a reference event that brings together academics and researchers in the field of learning factories to share their studies, best practices, and teaching modules. The goal is to foster collaboration among participants to achieve excellence in education and research in manufacturing engineering and production management. In 2025, the conference was organized by the Department of Industrial Engineering at Stellenbosch University, in the beautiful city of Stellenbosch, South Africa.

As part of the LCAMP Project, two papers related to WP6, led by Miguel Altuna and titled “Collaborative Learning Factory for Industry 4.0 Technologies Absorption”, were presented.

On one hand, Prof. Klaus-Dieter Rupp, from DHBW-Heidenheim, presented the paper “Configuration Manager for a Collaborative Learning Factory”.

On the other hand, Liher Errasti, from Miguel Altuna LHII, presented the paper “Integration of Assistance Technology in a Collaborative Learning Factory for Human-Centric Applications”, which describes the implementation of an Operative Assistance System (OAS) in a digital assembly workstation within a Collaborative Learning Factory (CLF). This system integrates augmented reality (AR), 3D sensors based on Time of Flight (ToF) technology, and real-time data acquisition to enhance training in simulated industrial environments. Its design allows students to optimize processes, improve decision-making, and experiment with advanced technology, all while maintaining a human-centric approach focused on operator well-being and adaptive ergonomics.

Beyond presenting LCAMP’s advancements, participating in CLF 2025 has been an opportunity to learn about various ongoing projects worldwide in the field of learning factories. In total, more than 90 papers were presented, and the conference gathered 107 attendees from various institutions and international companies.

CLF 2025 has been an excellent opportunity to disseminate the results of the LCAMP Project and strengthen collaboration with international experts in learning factories and digital transformation in the industry.
